Launch-Burger – Googie Sign Illustration

I occasionally root through all the sketches I’ve amassed throughout the years to see if there’s anything that gives me inspiration. Once and a while, I’ll find something in that sketch bin that just begs to be finished.

Yesterday, I pulled out a two minute sketch of a little astronaut, holding a tray with a burger and fries, looking for all the world like he was traveling by jet-pack in the same way that carhops of a bygone age would have gone by roller-skates. You see that sketch below.

Anyway, I spent a few hours turning this little character, who I’d previously named “L’il Astor,” into a Googie / retro-futuristic restaurant sign.

Tiki Bar Comic Book – First Page

The first page of my tiki themed comic book. Click image to see the full page.

I am currently developing a tiki bar themed horror/sci-fi comic book. Inspired by the pulp magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, there will be lots of chills, thrills, sexy ladies, manly men and a few surprises. This is most definitely a genre piece that will appeal not only to the tiki and mid-century fans, but also to retro sci-fi, horror and noir fans. Stay tuned for updates, as I plan to make this available on my website, as I complete new pages.

“Hitchhiking Chutzpah” Featured on The Ken P.D. Snydecast Experience

Dr. Weinerbreath (if that’s his REAL name) has written up my little illustration, “Hitchhiking Chutzpah” on the official Ken P.D. Snydecast blog. Read the article here.

Thank you Dr. Weinerbreath. I hope you’ll excuse me if I stick with my regular family practitioner.

New Art Print – “Eames Chair Pin-up”

Original art by Jason Snyder

Here’s my latest pin-up. Major mid-century modern influence here, with the Eames Lounge Chair. I painted this entirely in Photoshop.

If you’d like to purchase this print in various sizes (along with greeting cards, and a few other specialty items), visit my shop on Deviantart.com.

Farewell Commander Adams

One of my favorites, Leslie Nielsen, has passed on. While I have enjoyed his comedic side over the years, the real influence he had on me was his role in “Forbidden Planet”, which I consider to be one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. In many ways, Nielsen’s Commander J. J. Adams was the precursor to Captain Kirk. This is interesting in view of the fact that the Captain Kirk, William Shatner, followed in Nielsen’s footsteps, making the transition from dramatic to comedic rolls.

In any case, Leslie Nielsen will be missed.

New Art Print – “Pinball Queen”

Original art by Jason Snyder

I’ve been working on this for a while. I think I’ve completed three or four other paintings between the time I started this and now. Honestly, I’m still tweaking. The smoke effects aren’t necessarily going to stay. I like colored smoke, but one does need to consider theme and appropriate atmosphere. I think there are a few lighting issues too. Nevertheless, the essence of what I was trying to accomplish is now in place.

New Illustration – “Hitchhiking Chutzpah”

Phil Silvers, Dana Snyder, Ken Plume, Haunted Mansion, Doom Buggy
Original art by Jason Snyder

I’ve been a fan of Phil Silvers since the first time I saw “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” when I was 10 or 11. In every role he played, ‘The King of chutzpah’, was a wheeler-dealer. A pushy but sort of lovable flim-flam man. Obnoxious, always on, deprecating to those around him… and very very funny. I’m trying to think of any modern comic who’s equatable, but none occur to me.

This print features and is dedicated to Dana Snyder and Ken Plume, hosts of the Ken P.D. Snydecast. They’re both fans of Silvers and Disney, (especially Snyder, who I believe at times actually does channel the spirit of Phil Silvers) so I decided to combine these concepts into a single work. As such, you have the ghost of Phil Silvers hitchhiking with the guys in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion.

Snyder and Plume are interesting cats.

Dana Snyder is the voice of Master Shake on Cartoon Network’s deviously twisted, “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” and voice acts on a dozen or so popular cartoons shows. He’s also a frequent performer at Burlesque events around the country. He happens to be obsessed with Tiki culture and Disney themeparks, subjects that I’m no stranger to.

Ken Plume is a powerful web presence. He cut his teeth editing IGN FilmForce, and was later hired by Kevin Smith to run quickstopentertainment.com (which eventually morphed into asitecalledfred.com when Smith fully handed over control to Plume.) Ken would claim that he’s ‘most notable for his interviews’ but I think he has transcended that humble statement. Few other web producers have as much geek cred with the fan boy community as Plume. And yes, his interviews are great.

The Snydecast is an entertaining show, featuring film and pop-culture lore, by two combative and funny hosts. Give it a listen at A Site Called Fred.

Old Art – Tiki Illustrations

Tiki Art Print
Original art by Jason Snyder

I created this illustration for a failed website a few years ago. I found it in the archives today and really enjoy looking at it. That’s not something that can be said for all of my old illustrations.

Another from the archives. Obviously, this is inspired by Shag. Honestly, I try not to be a copycat. I think I created this back in 2001, when I desperately wanted a Shag print but couldn’t afford one. It used to hang over the tub in my first apartment. Those were the halcyon days…
