Launch-Burger – Googie Sign Illustration

I occasionally root through all the sketches I’ve amassed throughout the years to see if there’s anything that gives me inspiration. Once and a while, I’ll find something in that sketch bin that just begs to be finished.

Yesterday, I pulled out a two minute sketch of a little astronaut, holding a tray with a burger and fries, looking for all the world like he was traveling by jet-pack in the same way that carhops of a bygone age would have gone by roller-skates. You see that sketch below.

Anyway, I spent a few hours turning this little character, who I’d previously named “L’il Astor,” into a Googie / retro-futuristic restaurant sign.

Comic Book Concept Art

Comic Concept Art by Jason Snyder

This is a follow-up to my post months ago featuring some art from my Tiki / sci-fi comic book. This time around it’s a character study of my protagonist, a hard boiled private investigator, caught up in a series of paranormal incidents.

I’m still developing the story, and it’ll be a while coming before I start further panel work. I love the idea though. It’s a mash-up of California tiki culture in the 1950s, mixed with film noir, science fiction and UFO lore. Right now, I’m feeling very influenced by Ed Wood (both the man, and his movies) and Dave Stevens phenomenal “Rocketeer” graphic novel series. More on this as it develops.

Galaga Girl Pinup Art

Galaga Girl - By Jason Snyder

My latest pinup. It’s been a while since I’ve put my nose to the grind and really worked on my art. I’m enthusiastic about this one though, and I believe it will help me to get back on task.

I love video arcades, and Galaga is one of my all time favorite games. It seemed like a natural subject for me to take on.

Neon Roadtrip Column on Roadside Online

A friend of mine, William Flood, has a new recurring column on Roadside Online. Entitled Neon Roadtrip, Bill’s column focuses on a variety of mid-century themes, including Airstream trailers, neon signage and retro architecture, all fortified by photos from his travels. Watch his stuff with interest.

Incidentally, if you like the logo and banner work for Neon Roadtrip, that’s a little of my handiwork. Feel free to drop me a line if you dig my style and would like some work done.

Tiki Bar Comic Book – First Page

The first page of my tiki themed comic book. Click image to see the full page.

I am currently developing a tiki bar themed horror/sci-fi comic book. Inspired by the pulp magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, there will be lots of chills, thrills, sexy ladies, manly men and a few surprises. This is most definitely a genre piece that will appeal not only to the tiki and mid-century fans, but also to retro sci-fi, horror and noir fans. Stay tuned for updates, as I plan to make this available on my website, as I complete new pages.

My Tiki Dress-Up game has arrived. Now you can dress up an Easter Island Moai tiki in a variety of fashionable nautical apparel. Hawaiian shirts, Polynesian leis, smoking jacket and fez, and more. As I continue adding to the game, I’d like to hear your suggestions for future outfits. E-mail me, or leave a comment here.

“Hitchhiking Chutzpah” on the Snydecast

Ken Plume and Dana Snyder discussed the print on the most recent Snydecast at about 40 minutes in. Much discussion on possible familial connections between Dana and I. There aren’t any.

Dr. Weinerbreath (if that’s his REAL name) has written up my little illustration, “Hitchhiking Chutzpah” on the official Ken P.D. Snydecast blog. Read the article here.

Thank you Dr. Weinerbreath. I hope you’ll excuse me if I stick with my regular family practitioner.

New Art Print – “Sun In Her Face”

Original art by Jason Snyder.

I created this portrait completely in Photoshop and did a little experimenting with linear halftone. It has sort of an 80s commercial art feel to it, I think. Click image to enlarge.
